Fun Baking Website - Bakerella

As some of you may already know - I like trying new recipes, especially baking recipes!  Sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day for regular meals because we're baking up sweet treats instead.  One of my daughters just told me about a new site that features fun new recipes and inspirations.  The best part of the website is that several ingredients are "pantry" ingredients or easy to purchase as part of your "3 month" pantry supplies.  Take a look ---my personal favorite are the Red Velvet Cake balls --- you know what I'm trying next!

New Novel from Marilyn Bunderson!

Here's the latest news from Sister Bunderson!  Be sure to check out her blog!

Hello to all my family and friends,

I wanted to issue each of you an invitation. I have written a book that will soon be published. It's a Young Adult fiction titled
The Mark and the release date is March 8, 2010. If you would like to see more about it you can visit my blog: www.mrbunderson.blogspot.com or my websitewww.mrbunderson.com (thanks for your help Chandler!). The website still needs a little work, we're waiting for a couple of permissions from my publisher to post the first chapter and the book cover and some artwork stuff, but it is open for visitors.

I truly hope that I don't offend anyone in sending this out but I'm excited to share my news with all my friends and family--at lease ones I have current email addresses for... Also, I wanted you to know that I'll be giving out some FREE STUFF during the month of February. All of you are eligible to enter my giveaway contests except for my children (I'm so sorry kids but it wouldn't seem fair).

Please, please don't feel obligated to purchase a book or even visit. However, if you know anyone that likes YA fiction feel free to let them know.

Thanks,
Marilyn Bunderson
aka M. R. Bunderson (marketing decision made by my publisher:)

Emergency Heat Sources from Food Storage Made Easy

Here are some helpful tips for emergency heat sources from www.foodstoragemadeeasy.net

Emergency Heat Sources

Keeping warm is essential for survival. Loss of body heat, Hypothermia, is very dangerous and can lead to loss of body parts and even death. Wet conditions quickly increase the loss of body heat. When traditional heat sources are not available, below are a few ideas to help you keep warm:
dry
If you get wet from rain, snow or sweat, change into clothing that is dry. Wet clothing loses its insulation value and extracts body heat 240 times faster than dry clothing. Wool clothing and blankets are preferred. Cotton clothing, particularly denim, retains water. Woll clothing is insulating, water resistant, and keeps your body warm even if it is wet.
hats
Covering your head is vital as you can lose up to 80% of your body heat through your head. A knitted wool stocking hat is good.
insulated
Feet can be kept warm by wearing wool socks and wearing two pair if your shoes are large enough. A towel could also be wrapped over shoes and duct-taped on.
layered
Several thin layers of loose-fitting clothing retain body heat and can be removed easily if body starts to perspire and/or you are chilling. Water & wind resistant outer clothing with a hood. Also, scarf or towel to cover your mouth to keep cold air from your lungs.
sleeping
Two or more people huddled together inside two sleeping bags zipped together will be warmer than each in separate sleeping bags. A smaller bag can also be placed inside a larger-sized one.
car
If trapped in your car during a snowstorm, run heater 10 minutes every hour. Make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow and open one window a crack to allow ventilation.
mylar
Good in wind or rain. Put a wool blanket between you and the Mylar blanket, if possible.
survival
rice
You can also use socks filled with rice/beans and tied shut. Heat the packs/socks in a fire or coals. They will maintain heat for a period of time. Rocks or bricks can also be heated thoroughly, then carefully wrapped in towels or newspapers.
thermal
inscl
Leaves, newspaper, straw, etc. (stuffed between two layers of clothing). Tie your shoe laces around the cuffs of your pants to hold material in. If you were trapped in a car during a snowstorm, use the stuffing from the seat cushions.
plastic
This can be worn as a rain jacket or can insulate the body if stuffed with dry leaves or grass

Re-Design without a Dime!

New year - need new ideas for home decor?  This is about the time of year when all the holiday decor is put away and I'm left feeling like my home is bare. What I'd LIKE to do is completely buy a whole new look for my space - but when reality checks in - it usually means I move the furniture at least 3 different ways.   Try  refreshing your wall space with items you already have like collections, photos, mis-matched frames, etc.   The designers at  www.materialgirlsblog.com  have some great ideas on "Artful Arrangements"

Start the New Year with 3 month food storage

This year one of our goals is to focus on building and maintaining your 3 month food supply. Watch for the "Pantry list" that will be sent out via email and hard copies will be available in the Sunday binders.  Also follow this link:    http://everydayfoodstorage.net/training-cooking/three-month-supply   to help you get started. You are probably farther along that you really think.  By focusing on your 3 month storage, you are more likely to rotate.  Don't forget to pull some items from your long term storage and rotate them in.

Money saving tips from Pinching Your Pennies (PYP)

This has been a great resource for money saving tips. You can visit them at www.pinchingyourpennies.com  for  special deals and ideas!  Here's one I really liked

As a coupon'er/bargain shopper over 13 years, I've discovered (and you may have, too) that coupons and sales run in seasonal cycles. Here's a comprehensive guide to cracking the what and when is on sale. It may be a repeat for some, but I believe it is worth repeating. Hope it helps!

Seasonal Sales Cycles

JANUARY - Historically, Quaker has hot deals on cereal/all items. We see Pepsi/Tostitos go on sale mid-January (again, rebates abound for these). Other items of note this time of year are chili, side dishes, anything for hearty/warm meals.
• Post-Holiday Sales
• White Sales
• Sports and Weight Loss Equipment
• Computers
• Winter Apparel and Accessories
· Organizers, Rubbermaid totes, shelf organizers, planners, filing cabinets

FEBRUARY – many of the same food items as January
• Electronics
• Floor Coverings
• Housewares
• Furniture
• Candy and Chocolates

MARCH - Frozen food month. You'll find many stores are offering free freezers or fill-a-bag deals. Between March and April, look for spring cleaning deals, so many cleaner items will be on sale. With Easter, looks for eggs, ham, Kraft products to cycle into good sales. Paper products like towels, napkins, plates are starting to come on strong. Beverage items.
• Spring Apparel and Accessories
• Winter Sports Equipment
• Gardening Supplies
• Luggage

APRIL –
• Spring Apparel and Accessories
• Coats and Hats
• Paint
• Wallpaper
• Jewish Foods and Eggs

MAY -
get ready for summer! Here come loads of deals on BBQ sauce, frozen veggies, baked beans, and condiments of all kinds, summer-time meats (ribs, hotdogs, and ground beef). Also with all the holidays, look for tons of paper goods that match the holiday and pick them up after clearance. These deals generally continue through September!
• White Sale - Linens and Towels
• Spring Cleaning Supplies
• Auto Maintenance
• Home Maintenance
• Sodas & Bottled Water, Hotdogs, Hamburger Meat, Condiments, Paper & Plastic plates & cups
* Raid/Off bug repellents and sunscreens

JUNE –
• Summer Apparel and Accessories
• Pianos
• Television Sets
• Building Materials and Hardware
• Dairy Products

JULY –
• Air Conditioners
• Summer Sports Equipment
• Sportswear
• Craft Supplies
• Sodas, Hotdogs, Hamburger Meat, Condiments

AUGUST –
• White Sale - Linen and Towels
• BBQ and Patio Equipment
• Back to School Supplies
• Bathing Suits
• Fresh Fish and Vegetables
• Breakfast foods (Cold cereal-Juice-Waffles-etc)
• Cold lunch items for in lunch boxes

SEPTEMBER - back to school; time to fill up on snacks! Pudding cups, Capri suns, fruit snacks, cereal sales start up hard again, peanut butter/jelly. Also, like clockwork, there will be Prego coupons in August, and plan on getting lots and using them in a hurry before they expire in September when the spaghetti sauce goes on sale. Sauce wars between Ragu and Prego this month. Campbell’s soups will go on as well and there will be coupons in the end of August for these as well. Lunchables are on sale this time of year, too.
• Back to School Supplies and Apparel
• Gardening Supplies
• Housewares
• Bicycles
• Canned Goods

OCTOBER - Stock up on holiday foods – Stove Top, turkey, instant mashed potatoes, broth, cranberries, marshmallow, ice cream, pie shells, whipped cream, pudding. Look for great Kraft deals again this time of year. Piggyback those Kraft coupons when you can. Crackers are a biggie - going on for $1 or less a box. Lots of extra deals like $ off cheese WYB crackers. The real kicker is the after Christmas food deals! Save your coupons because pie fixings, fried onion, broth and canned green beans will be on deep discount. I got those onions for .50 a can, normally almost $4. These generally continue through December.
• Cars
• Houses
• Fishing Equipment
• Crystal, Silver, and Glassware
• Candy
· Baking/candy-making items (choc chips, sprinkles, vanilla, corn syrup, nuts, etc)

NOVEMBER -
• Winter Apparel and Accessories
• Quilts and Blankets
• Heating Devices
• Turkey, Sweet Potatoes
• Canned goods (soup, chicken broth, condensed milk, veggies etc)
• Baking goods

DECEMBER –
• Toys
• Gift Items
• Party ware
• Post-Holiday Sales
• Party Foods, Baking Goods, and Various Meat
• Canned goods (broth, soups, etc)

Year-round after a holiday, you can always pick up cheap cookie dough and any food related to a holiday.

Continual sales are candy, popcorn, chips, anything snacky, cereal (heavier in the fall/winter, but still around in the spring).
Frozen food sales seem to centralize on a brand and the switch brands the next month. I think the manufacturers buy slot time for sales. So last month, Stouffers was on sale hard, now lean cuisine is. Save the entire frozen coupon and then keep checking back for the brand of the month.

Frozen pizzas go on sale in the fall and then again the spring; not often in the summer because people don't want to turn their ovens on in the summer.

By all means, this isn't everything that you can get on sale, but if you follow the cycle and stock up (I never buy BBQ sauce in the winter), then you can get where you have enough on hand and only need to refill when the items are in season. The result is that you spend less and less with each successful cycle.
